FAQ-Matching
What
are the requirements for matching funds?
- Fire departments in areas serving populations
over 50,000 must agree to match the Federal grant funds with
an amount of non-Federal funds equal to 20 percent of the total
project cost.
- Fire departments serving areas with a population
between 20,001 and 50,000 (inclusive) will have to match the
Federal grant funds with an amount of non-Federal funds equal
to 10 percent of the total project cost.
- Fire departments service areas with a population
of 20,000 or less must match the Federal grant funds with an
amount of non-Federal funds equal to 5 percent of the total
project cost.
- All cost-share contributions must be cash.
No "in-kind" contributions will be considered for the statutorily
required cost-share. No waivers of this requirement will be
granted except for fire departments of Insular Areas as provided
for in 48 U.S.C. 1469a.
To summarize:
| Population Served |
Matching Requirement |
| Over 50,000 |
20% |
| Under 50,000 |
10% |
| Under 20,000 |
5% |
How
do I calculate the match required for my project?
The matching funds you
provide PLUS the grant award make up the total project cost, using
the following formula:
Grant
award
Matching
funds
+_______________
Total
project
Since your
matching requirement is based on the total project cost (NOT on
the grant award), the formula for your matching requirement based
on your award will be as follows:
Award
amount ÷ (1-required matching % as a decimal) x required
matching % as a decimal
EXAMPLE:
If your
request is $80,000, and your required match is 10% of the total
project cost, your required match would be:
$80,000
÷ (1-.10) x .10
OR
$80,000
÷ (.90) x .10
OR
$88,889
x .10
OR
$8,889
This would
make the total project $88,889, including your required match
of 10% or $8,889 and your award of $80,000.
